Former Newcastle Jets and Flamengo midfielder Bernardo Ribeiro has passed away from suspected heart issues.
The death is the second such tragedy to strike football in just a matter of days, after Dinamo Bucharest player Patrick Ekeng collapsed on the pitch during a televised Romanian league match against Viitorul Constanta.
Ribeiro is thought to have fallen ill during a friendly match for Friburguense on Saturday. According to reports he was then driven to the local hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead later that night.
Makig eight appearances in Australia for Newcastle Jets between 2012 and 2013, he also featured for teams in Albania and Finland as he tried out Europe.
At Flamengo he starred in youth tournaments such as the FIFA Youth Cup, earning rave reviews for his passing accuracy and vision.
There has been an outpouring of tributes to the player from former teammates and coaches alike, with Taylor Regan stressing it was a pleasure to share the pitch with him in Australia.

A number of other footballers have been taken seriously ill or have died due to heart conditions in recent years, including Piermario Morosini, Fabrice Muamba and Gregory Mertens.
